Profile

I am a Chartered Tax Advisor and the Legal  Practitioner Director of Mathews Tax Lawyers. I have over 30 years’  experience in the tax profession. As such, I bring a wealth of tax advisory and tax dispute resolution experience spanning a broad range of markets and  industries.

I specialise in tax dispute resolution. I have  negotiated the settlement of major tax disputes and run complex tax litigation in the Federal Court of Australia and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. In previous matters I have acted for taxpayers and the Commissioner  of Taxation, so I understand how each side of the table approaches a dispute.  Prior to entering private practice, I was Tax Counsel in the ATO. My vast  experience at the ATO, spanning over 13 years in policy, technical and  litigation areas, has given me a unique insight into the ATO’s approach to tax law interpretation, administration and litigation.

I was admitted to practise as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory and as  a barrister of the High Court of Australia and Federal Court of Australia on  29 June 2001. I was admitted to practise as a barrister of the Supreme Court  of Queensland on 11 March 2002. I am a member of the Queensland Law Society  and an associate member of the Bar Association of Queensland. I was granted  the designation Chartered Tax Advisor by The Tax Institute in 2006.
